Western Oregon University opts for its own board | News | The Register-Guard | Eugene, Oregon

SALEM — Another Oregon university says it’ll set up its own governing board.
The president of Western Oregon University, Mark Weiss, says the school in Monmouth southwest of Salem plans to have its own board rather than join other smaller universities in a consortium.
The University of Oregon, Oregon State and Portland State have all their own boards. They take authority once exercised by the state Board of Higher Education, such as hiring presidents.
The Legislature has allowed the four smaller universities to do likewise, or to pursue options such as forming a consortium or becoming branches of a bigger school.
The Statesman Journal reports that decisions are expected by March from Eastern Oregon University, Southern Oregon University and the Oregon Institute of Technology.
